The Wash Wader Research Group (WWRG) is a conservation charity that has been researching and monitoring the birds that use The Wash for over 70 years. Situated on the east coast of England, The Wash is the largest estuary in Britain and internationally significant for the number of waders (shorebirds) that occur there. The Group, run entirely by volunteers, operates in Norfolk and Lincolnshire and its work continues to highlight the critical importance of The Wash to birds refuelling during migration as well as those that breed and spend the winter there, helping to ensure this natural heritage is preserved for future generations.
We undertake fieldwork approximately once a month, mainly at weekends, but with longer trips during the main migratory period in the summer and early autumn. Members of WWRG live across Britain & Ireland, and even further afield, and the Group welcomes volunteer ringers from home and abroad who are interested in taking part in the fieldwork.
The BTO website contains more information on why we ring birds and why we use colour marks on our study species.
